The Other Voice: Um um for baby...

Written by my wonderful sister Noor, who is an incredibly hands-on mother... Enjoy!

Most of us get a warm and fuzzy feeling hearing brands that we grew up on like Cerelac cereal, Milupa teas and Farley’s biscuit. However, I feel our local supermarkets have not caught up with the increasing awareness our generation has about ingredients, as well as our rising demands for wholesome and organic products!

I find the limited choices we have in our local supermarkets contain unnecessary sugars, salts, artificial flavors and I would really prefer to have most of the ingredients my child intakes to be organic. At least at the beginning, which sets his/her preferences and tolerances for foods in a future near approaching.

Apart from home cooked purees of fresh vegetables, fruits and, when the time comes, meats, we need cereals, biscuits and sometimes a little help with something in a pot! With that in mind, here’s my list of favorite foods available in Kuwait and others that can be purchased from abroad.

Kuwait:

Plum Organic cereals and meals available in Sultan Center and select co-ops, however not always in stock

Gluten free pasta from Sultan Center

Hipp Organic Formula Milk and Finger Foods, sometimes available at Baroue

UK:

Organix finger foods, biscuits and cereals (international shipping available! www.organix.com)

Hipp Organic biscuits, cereals and baby rice (available in most UK supermarkets and pharmacies)

Lebanon:

65 Zahret el Ihsan st
Beirut, Achrafieh Lebanon
01 219 920

Offers a nice selection of cereals, biscuits and ready meals for babies.

Online Options:

Annabel Karmel baby pasta
Ella’s Kitchen baby foods

One could argue that we all turned out ok before the increase in demand for organic products, while that’s true we always strive to give our little ones the best when available. I hope the list above gives mothers some alternative sources for healthier options for their little ones. After all, who wouldn’t want to have a choice?

Breaking the old routine...

Home work, quizzes, exams... By the time your children are home from school, and you go through the process of asking them to do their work, shower, eat, etc, the day would almost be done.  If we really think about it, how much of our time goes towards giving orders, and trying hard to finish things on time?

This is one reason why we should always make the most of any opportunity we get to have fun, and enjoy time with our children.  One way is by using this time to Play, but another important way is by breaking the routine sometimes to celebrate different events.  You can make your own unconventional celebrations, be it a pajama-day, or movie-night with popcorn and the whole theater experience.  I personally love making an effort and celebrating even the most random events (I would have done the whole tea-party idea to celebrate Prince William's wedding if I was not out of town then :p).

So obviously, I am a fan of Halloween.  I spoke to many parents, and most of them have either ordered costumes online, or have been pre-planning and bought outfits on their trips abroad.  But surely, I thought, there must be something local!

This is what i found...

I was first greeted by "her loveliness" zipping past me.  The show room was done up well, and as soon as one of the staff member clapped, two or three ominous looking bats/creatures, started flapping their wings and making some sounds.  It was fun and unexpected!
The selection of children and adult costumes was extensive.  You have choices for full costumes, or just accessories.  There's also a big section for decorations and party favors (ask a staff member for information on assembly and design if you are planning a party).

Where is this???

They have truly outdone themselves this year, and are fully in the spirit.  Do check it out, I highly recommend it!

Here are some other pictures of Party Land...

Two Notes:
  • As aforementioned in a post, if you are taking your younger kids, prepare them first!  It might seem fun and funny to surprise them, but when your child cannot sleep at night, it will not be amusing anymore.
  • What do kids do in Halloween? Trick or treat.  Just like "Girgai3an" we have to be careful of the amount of sugar our kids are having.  Make a reasonable agreement with your kids about how much candy they are allowed to have.  Make sure they eat their main meals, and give them some exercise to release some of that sugar-high.

ADDITION: The great team at PartyLand has sent us a new 3D map of their store... There you go:

Comment-a-post

A comment posted by Dr. Siddiqa Hussein, my colleague at Soor Center on "One Letter At A Time... A.D.H.D" was worth sharing...  My post was targeting parents and professionals who are dealing with an already diagnosed child with ADHD, but Dr. Siddiqa's caution is very important to note...

"Proper diagnosis is very important. I believe and suggest strongly that check out every possible reason responsible for short attention and hyperactive movements. There can be many reasons for a child to be inattentive: may be what the teacher is teaching in the class is too difficult for him to understand, often heard children saying that they are bored or uninterested. Another reason can be that child is preoccupied because they are scared of their dreams , they are sad because mum and dad fight in the house, they are scared of the irrational expectations of parents ,their harsh punishments or they are worried about their parent's health problems. This emotional instability takes away their concentration. If all these factors are ruled out and the child is still unable to pay attention then he should be formally assessed for Attention deficit. Same applies for hyperactivity too; just being naughty or unstructured is not enough to label a child as hyperactive. Having an ADHD child is not a curse but a blessing, he keeps you challenged and brings out the best in you. He gives you chance to learn so much more than parents of normal children."

Are you doing anything special with your little ones for Halloween this year?
This is a great time to get in the spirit and be silly and just have fun!

It is also a great way to take some time to talk about some of the common fears children have about ghosts, spirits, and/or costumes (many children fear clowns and characters like Barney).  You can start desensitizing your scared child by showing him/her the different parts of the costume in a non-threatening and playful manner; for example, the nose of the clown, the make-up, the hair and the clothes.  Separately they may not be a threat.  Also coloring your children's faces into different characters can be considered fun, and you can show them how they changed without it being scary...  But be careful not to push your child too hard, if they seem genuinely afraid, do stop and consult with a professional...

One letter at a time...A.D.H.D.

Some have called it the modern-day disease, others call it the age of electronics.  Vaccinations have been blamed, Camel's milk has been recommended... Different names have been given including: ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADD, AD/HD...

How many of you have heard of either or all of these acronyms/names?

I am not writing a post about all the details related to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)... at least not tonight.  I would rather have us all think about what it actually means, and I hope to start breaking down the stigma associated with this particular learning difference.  If you are interested to learn more, please look at the listed links at the bottom of the post.
First of all, I would like us to look at each individual component of the name:  Attention, Deficit, Hyperactivity, Disorder.  If we take each word as a piece of the challenge, we then need try to overcome that challenge by presenting a solution.  This is my view of what the solution should be like:

A─ ATTENTION                →→→→→→                  ENGAGE & STIMULATE
D─ DEFICIT                       →→→→→→→                 FEED BODY & MIND
H─ HYPERACTIVE         →→→→→→→                  RELEASE & REGULATE
D─ DISORDER                  →→→→→→→                  ORGANIZE & STRUCTURE

Attention:  A child or adult with ADHD would benefit greatly from understanding what their learning style is, and by being engaged using multiple modalities and ways.  As a parent, teacher or professional, one must help the child maintain attention by providing information visually, verbally and actively/concretely.

Deficit:  As I have mentioned in previous posts, I am not a fan of complete elimination diets nor haphazard prescriptions (whether it is drugs or supplements).  The process of dealing with ADHD, is usually a process of trial and error.  We must try, through eliminations and inclusions to see what works best for our child.  Always do full medical check-ups to see if your child has any medical conditions and any allergies/intolerances.  After that we can start with decreasing the child's intake of unhealthy food habits (sweets, fried food, etc), increasing activity level, providing structure, educating ourselves and the child about the challenges, and also thinking about medication options.

Hyperactivity:  It is critical to engage in physical activity.  It is not only a release, but it is also vital that the person with ADHD has a positive attitude about his activity.  S/he can be a great athlete, dancer, performer, and does not have to always be punished or criticized for his/her energy.

Disorder:  Incorporate structure, discipline and routine into your life.  Reminders are key!.  Have visual reminders of the house/classroom rules and explain consequences to actions.  Be a role-model yourself.  Help your child organize his space, thoughts and actions.

I hope that by providing this small amount of information we can start thinking together about what ADHD really means.  If you suspect that your child may be struggling, follow-up by having him/her assessed, and start teaching yourself about ADHD.  You can also contact professionals in the field to help you through this process, as many parents request parenting skills training.
